Review Questions Essay Example for Free
Review Questions Essay What are some factors (patterns of behavior) that project a companyââ¬â¢s culture? List several examples from organizations you work in. The factors that are most important in the creation of an organizationââ¬â¢s culture include foundersââ¬â¢ values, preferences, and industry demands. A companyââ¬â¢s culture, particularly during its early years, is inevitably tied to the personality, background, and values of its founder or founders, as well as their vision for the future of the organization. It is shaped in the early days of a companyââ¬â¢s history. When entrepreneurs establish their own businesses, the way they want to do business determines the organizationââ¬â¢s rules, the structure set-up in the company, and the people they hire to work with them. While founders undoubtedly exert a powerful influence over corporate cultures, the industry characteristics also play a role. Industry characteristics and demands act as a force to create similarities among organizational cultures. For example, despite some differences, many companies in the insurance and banking industries are stable and rule oriented, many companies in the high-tech industry have innovative cultures, and companies in the nonprofit industry tend to be people oriented. 3. What are three major elements that complicate listening? Give customer-service related examples of each. The three elements that complicate listening comprise the internal, environmental and interactional elements. To start with, internal elements involve the use of words at a level that the hearer can hear, and the most importantly, can understand. Talking loudly and nonsensely or meaninglessly can totally deviate your customers from doing business with your company. The customer services on the phone can result in such scenario if the voice of the customer rep is too low or too loud, or the line is not clear or s/he uses very technical words that the receiver cannot understand. Secondly, the environmental factors ââ¬Å"which determine what we are able to listen to and what we cannot. These factors can impact our individual ability to listen and our organizationââ¬â¢s listening capacity, as well. These factors include: à Our individual listening capacity, the presence of noise, and the use or misuse of gatekeepers. â⬠(Timm, Paul, Pg. 43) ââ¬Å"In contrast to the environmental elements of the listening process, the interactional elements concern internal psychological processes that are not as easily identified. Two such psychological elements deserve careful consideration: self-centeredness and self-protection.

Anger Management and Health Essay -- Health Anger Emotions Essays
Anger Management and Health Everybody feels anger from time to time. People have been documented feeling anger since biblical times when God was considered angry. Babies even exhibit signs that are interpreted as anger, such as crying or screaming. Anger is not in any way unique to people. Animals also have the ability to feel and express anger. In our personal lives we get angry over at least one thing on almost a daily basis, whether it be on the job, with a spouse or loved one, or perhaps with a figure of authority. Many psychologists have written about anger, discussing the relationship between anger and fear. Each of the individuals that comprise humanity possesses at least one phobia, in the same way that each is capable of possessing anger. The negativity that is associated with phobias often spills over into our feelings about anger. We begin to think negatively about anger since we associate it with fear. Plato was the first to suggest that anger was a disbalance. According to Dr. Willard Gaylin, a prominent psychologist, anger is still seen as a disbalance by many of today's psychologists. Since Plato, anger has suffered a bad reputation. We only have to imagine a domestic abuse scene to immediately condemn anger in all of its manifestations. There is a reason why anger is viewed in a negative light. Nobody likes it when someone is angry with them. We tend to avoid the wrath of those around us. This is one reason we see anger as negative. Another reason may lie closer to Plato's concept of imbalance. The negative perception of anger is evident in the American Heritage Dictionary's definitions of the word anger (1): 1. A feeling of extreme displeasure, hostility, indignation, or someone or something; rage; wrath; ire. 2. (Obsolete) Trouble; pain; affliction. To say, "I'm getting angry", is to invoke fear in another, usually, that fear originates from a perception that the utterer of the phrase is about to take some sort of dramatic action. Dr. Gaylin speaks for these emotions, rage is a response to a perceived assault that effects the body in interesting ways. Skeletal muscles are tensed; the autonomic system moves to increase the supply of adrenaline and redistribute the blood flow of the body; certain muscles are contracted and opposing ones relaxed. (2) Apparently, anger is viewed negatively for a reas... ...s easy. But to be angry at the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not so easy.â⬠(4) Chronic anger does lead to health problems. Not everyone suffers from anger, but for those that do, it means a multitude of emotional related illnesses. Anger is often accompanied by an imbalance of hormones, as Plato recognized, and no imbalance is healthy in the long run. With consciousness and relaxation, people may be able to achieve dominance over anger, rather than allowing it to have dominance over them. Genetically modified organism Essay
A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism which been using genetic engineering techniques, and Monsanto is a publicly agricultural biotechnology company. Monsanto has a huge influence on GMO products. Unfortunately, Monsanto is not a great company because they produce harmful products and lie to their customers. Absolutely, Monsanto didnââ¬â¢t do the illegal things, but they didnââ¬â¢t obey the ethics. As seen in the video, I would like to discuss Contemporary Consequentialism which depend on justice, Kantian Ethics which as a form of deontological ethics and Social Contract Theory which depend on law to discuss Monsantoââ¬â¢s case. GMO products sounds like good for our health and economy, but some companies like Monsanto donââ¬â¢t do well. Contemporary Consequentialism Contemporary consequentialism is the class of normative ethical theories which justice takes an important role. As its name suggests, Consequentialism is the view depend only on consequences. Justice contains distributive justice and retributive justice (Driver P61). Justice concern the distribution of benefits is called distributive justice, such as taxation and health care. Justice concern the distribution of rewards and punishments is called retributive justice, such as good citizenââ¬â¢s awards and prison terms. The theory ââ¬Å"determining whether or not an action is right are the consequences produced by that actionâ⬠(Driver, 2007, p. 40) did not lead to positive consequences for the Monsanto company. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also lied about their founding in 1992. Since 1992, 37 people died and thousands more were seriously ill after eating one of the GMO foods made by Monsanto. This is not only ethic issue, but also is illegal. Monsantoââ¬â¢s character was selfish and didnââ¬â¢t make the world a better place (Hinman, 2002). Monsanto should be punished by justice. These GMO foods are killing people by the tens of thousands and The FDA doesnââ¬â¢t have any responds. I think FDA is the biggest travesty in the U. S. Theyââ¬â¢re turning a blind eye to their patientââ¬â¢s misery. Kantian Ethics Kantian ethics is a deontological ethical theory which proposed by Immanuel Kant. He said ââ¬Å"A good will is good not because of what it affects or accomplishes, nor because of its fitness to attain some proposed end; itââ¬â¢s good only though itââ¬â¢s willingâ⬠(Driver, P80). According to the video we know the world according to Monsanto. Itââ¬â¢s a very dangerous phenomenon. They want the public to believe they commit supererogatory acts. We are present several scenarios where Monsantoââ¬â¢s influence on FDA and other regulatory agencies has helped them to continue their un-ethical business practices. Hinman said ââ¬Å"what is fair for one should be fair for all. â⬠Monsanto doesnââ¬â¢t care other things just want to get maximum profit with all the possible methods. This is all about money. More money is selling GMO foods to other countries that are willing to pay large amounts of money. Maybe local and organic foods are healthy but there is no market for them. Monsanto make a decision which is opposite to Kantian ethics. Monsanto needs to know we should to keep promises even when we donââ¬â¢t want to do. As we seen in the videos, we know no matter the starting point is moral or Kantian ethics, Monsanto and its subsidiaries made some wrong decisions. Social Contract Theory Social contract theory is the view that personââ¬â¢s moral. Social contract theory is rightly associated with modern moral and it is also a theory or model. Thomas Hobbs said: ââ¬Å"where there is no common power there is no law, where no law, no Injustice (Driver, P102). â⬠He believed that human beings were motivated by self-interest. This document which Monsanto have claims that it has ââ¬Å"evolved from long-standing commitments to safety, environmental protection, customer service, first-class research, and product stewardshipâ⬠(Robin, 2008). Monsantoââ¬â¢s document is total lie. Farmers also need to sign an agreement when they want to grow the GMO food from Monsanto. Monsanto does believe that they are ethically right in suing a small farmer in order to preserve the balance of the farming community as a whole. Monsanto is using everyone to monopolize food and in the end with the ultimate power over everyone. I think I donââ¬â¢t any great idea to solve this big problem. According to the video, I think just hope Monsanto doesnââ¬â¢t decide to grow marijuana. They canââ¬â¢t mass produce organic foods any better than they can keep Wall Street on track. We know the products which Monsanto produced should not exist. These products canââ¬â¢t help us to make a better world. According to this theory we know first we must be guarantees that people will not harm each other, and people must be able to rely on the other to keep their agreements. Absolutely, Monsanto doesnââ¬â¢t obey the theory. Conclusion Through the discussion about Contemporary Consequentialism, Kantian Ethics and Social Contract Theory, We know Monsanto didnââ¬â¢t make a good decision between money and moral, and the FDA also help Monsanto to lie to their people. These harmful products and illegal documents must be stopped by government. Sometimes we can find the problems, but they are difficult to solve. GMO products are an awesome invention, and I think it can change our life. People are wrong, Monsanto is wrong. Monsanto cannot find an equilibrium point between ethics and business, or we can say money and moral. Many people and company were destroyed by the profit. We need to find a great equilibrium point and it will help us to work better and will not lose ourselves. Reference Hinman, L Ph. D. (2002) Basic moral orientations overview. Argumentative Essay On Technology - 1058 Words
Year by year, day by day, and minute by minute, machines are expanding. They have grown so much that this day in age, everyone is technology-dependent. The simplest tasks have become broken in our minds and we almost always use technology as our crutch. Both scientists and the average person have played a part in making technology what it is today. Whether its an astronaut using a robot arm in outer space or your neighbor, using their GPS to find their way to work, nearly everyone on Earth uses some form of computer operator daily. There is no telling how much technology has grown in the past century, and the possibilities for its expansion in the next century are indefinite. An extensive number of worrisome people ponder if the humanâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦After reading Nicholas Carrs article Is Google Making Us Stupid? I still agree with my original claim, although not so much on the topic that robots will purposely hurt us; that is for a different discussion. Carrs article includes evidence about how Google is hurting our brain more than helping it. Carr explains his own experiences before technology became the center of our world. He describes the lengthy books he used to read and how he used to dive into them. His words are, my mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles. Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski (Carr 315). Once technology arose, he admits to not being able to read long books or articles anymore, admitting that he only skims due to his reduced attention span. Aside from reading, Google is making information more accessible. Some argue that with a sea of information at our fingertips, we are infinitely powerful. While it is mind boggling to think of the possibilities we have with technology, our minds are becoming lazy due to it. Our brains are no longer faced with challenges of finding information, therefore our brains no longer feel the rewarding sense.
